Voice Writing
Put your cursor in a chat, document, or form and say what you want to write. Owlfy turns it into clean text and types it right where your cursor is.
How to use it
Section titled “How to use it”The Voice Writing key is Right Command on macOS and Right Ctrl on Windows and Linux.
- Hold to talk: hold the key while you speak, and let go to type.
- Tap to toggle: tap once to start, tap again when you’re done.
- Double-tap to dictate: tap twice quickly to start live dictation, made for long recordings like meetings and lectures.
A small voice bar shows what you’re saying while you talk. To keep your computer’s sound from interfering, system audio is muted while you record. You can turn this off in Settings → Voice.
Writing styles: sound the way you want
Section titled “Writing styles: sound the way you want”Go to Voice Writing → Voice Output, pick a style, and turn on Use Writing Style. From then on, what you say is rewritten in that style before it’s typed. For example:
| Situation | Style description |
|---|---|
| Casual chat | Keep it conversational; drop “um”, “like”, and repeated words |
| Work messages | Make it concise, polite, and professional |
| Technical docs | Precise and well structured, with clear bullet points |
Write your own style description, or click Generate a Writing Style with AI and describe the effect you want in a sentence. With Use Writing Style off, Owlfy types exactly what you said.
Output language: speak one language, type another
Section titled “Output language: speak one language, type another”Turn on Set Output Language and choose a language. Whatever you say is translated before it’s typed. Supported languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Portuguese, Italian, Arabic, Thai, Vietnamese, and Indonesian.
It’s handy for messaging colleagues abroad or writing emails in another language. Double-check names, numbers, and technical terms before you send.
Smart Phrases: one phrase, a whole paragraph
Section titled “Smart Phrases: one phrase, a whole paragraph”In Voice Writing → Smart Phrases, link a short phrase to a longer block of text. For example:
- “My address” → your full street address, city, and phone number
- “My signature” → your complete email sign-off
Then hold the Voice Writing key and say “my address”, and the whole block is typed for you.
Dictionary: get names and jargon right
Section titled “Dictionary: get names and jargon right”In Voice Writing → Dictionary, add names, places, product names, and industry terms you use often, like “Kubernetes” or “Siobhan”. Owlfy gives these words priority when recognizing your speech.
Get back what you said
Section titled “Get back what you said”Everything you dictate is saved. Open Voice input history from the voice bar and click any entry to paste it again. If your text didn’t land where you expected (say, your cursor wasn’t in a text box), this is where to find it.
Microphone and recognition settings
Section titled “Microphone and recognition settings”In Settings → Voice you can:
- choose and test your microphone;
- set your Primary language (the language you usually speak) for better accuracy;
- turn on Show live transcript to see words as you speak;
- turn the voice bar exit sound on or off;
- turn on Use speech recognition API to use your own Alibaba Cloud Bailian speech recognition key.
Want your recordings to stay on your computer? Turn on Local Speech Recognition in Settings → Privacy. The first time, Owlfy downloads the recognition model; after that, speech is turned into text right on your machine. Writing styles and translation still need an internet connection to rewrite the text.
